Berrien is Michigan's southwest corner: forty miles of Lake Michigan dunes, the state's oldest wine appellation, an orchard belt that supplies half the Midwest, and two entirely different visitor economies stacked on the same county. The southern towns — collectively trademarked as Harbor Country — are Chicago's weekend, ninety minutes away by car or Amtrak. The northern twin cities of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor are a working harbor and a real downtown. Both are worth your time. They are not the same trip.

Two base towns · New Buffalo in the south, St. Joseph in the north, 35 miles apart

The two anchors

This county doesn't have one center, and pretending otherwise will strand you in traffic on the Red Arrow Highway.

South — New Buffalo and Harbor Country

Nine lakeshore communities: New Buffalo, Union Pier, Lakeside, Harbert, Sawyer, Bridgman, Three Oaks, Grand Beach, and Michiana. (Bridgman was added to the official designation in 2024.) Beaches, dunes, galleries, antique shops, and a restaurant scene that runs on Chicago money. Roughly 75 miles from downtown Chicago; Amtrak’s Wolverine and Pere Marquette both stop in New Buffalo, and the downtown, beach, and marina are walkable from the platform.

North — St. Joseph and Benton Harbor

A bluff-top downtown above Silver Beach, a working river, an art center, a brewery, and a genuinely good restaurant row. Less curated, more functional, and considerably cheaper.

Between — the fruit belt and wine country

Baroda, Berrien Springs, and Stevensville, where the tasting rooms are. Roughly equidistant from both anchors.

Plan around one. Day-trip the other.

A large share of the best kitchens open Thursday through Sunday only.

Summer Friday through Sunday, Harbor Country is at capacity — reservations mandatory, beach lots full by mid-morning, rentals booked months out. Midweek in the same season is calm and half the price. The north county runs a more normal week and is cheaper year-round. Off-season the south county thins dramatically and the Thursday-to-Sunday schedules tighten further.

Silver Beach & the South Pier

Silver Beach & the South Pier

Beach access free · Paid parking in season · Year-round

The center of gravity in the north county. A wide public beach below the downtown bluff, with a pier walk out to the channel and views to the north pier lighthouses. Free to enter, and parking is free from November through April. The Blossomtime Grand Floral Parade — the finale of Michigan's oldest and largest multi-community festival — runs through here and Benton Harbor each spring.

Krasl Art Center

Krasl Art Center

Free · Tue–Sat

Free admission, a Chihuly installation in the entry hall, rotating painting, photography, print, and sculpture exhibitions, and native-plant landscaping outside. Compact — an hour is enough — and it anchors an outdoor sculpture walk through downtown St. Joseph. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Box Factory for the Arts

Box Factory for the Arts

Artist studios and galleries in a converted factory, free to walk through, with the working studios open on varying schedules. Pairs naturally with the Krasl for a rainy afternoon.

Benton Harbor Arts District

Benton Harbor Arts District

Free

Galleries, the ARS Gallery and Arts and Culture Center, and outdoor sculpture across a few blocks — free, and the part of the twin cities most visitors skip. Benton Harbor has had a hard century and is in the middle of a slow, contested revitalization; the food and art here are among the best in the county and it deserves to be visited rather than driven past.

Sarett Nature Center

Sarett Nature Center

Donation · Tue–Sun

A nature center with real teeth: indoor exhibits with turtles, owls, and snakes, an observation window over feeders that will show you fifteen species in five minutes, a butterfly house in season, and a trail system through marsh and upland. Guided mushroom walks and naturalist programs run year-round. Closed Monday.

Silver Beach Carousel, Compass Fountain & Discovery Zone

Silver Beach Carousel, Compass Fountain & Discovery Zone

Ticketed · Seasonal

The cluster at the foot of the bluff, and the county’s most recognisable family stop. The carousel carries 48 hand-carved figures and two chariots; the Whirlpool Compass Fountain runs jets children are meant to get soaked in; the Curious Kids’ Discovery Zone and the Silver Beach Amusement Park exhibits fill the rest of the block. Everything is within a two-minute walk of the sand.

Niles: Fort St. Joseph Museum & Chapin Mansion

Niles: Fort St. Joseph Museum & Chapin Mansion

Free · Closed Sun–Mon · Niles

The county seat of nothing and the oldest continuously settled place in Michigan — four flags have flown over Niles, which is why it calls itself the City of Four Flags. The Fort St. Joseph Museum holds one of the better Great Lakes collections in the state, including Sitting Bull pictographs, and it sits in the carriage house of the Chapin Mansion, an 1884 Queen Anne now serving as city hall and open to walk through. Twenty-five minutes inland from the lake and the obvious answer to a grey afternoon.

Journeyman Distillery

Tastings ticketed · Daily · Three Oaks

Housed in the Warren Featherbone Company building, which made corsets and buggy whips in the 1800s and is now one of the more spectacular industrial reuses in the Midwest. Certified organic whiskey, gin, rum, and vodka distilled in view of the dining room, plus tours, tastings, an outdoor putting green, and the Staymaker restaurant. It gets loud when it's full — go midweek or early if you want to hear the person across the table.

The Acorn

Ticketed · Three Oaks

A 250-seat performance room in another former corset-stay factory, running national touring acts in a space small enough that there's no bad seat. With Journeyman across town and the Vickers Theatre showing independent and foreign film on the main street, it is the reason Three Oaks punches above a town of 1,600.

Red Arrow Highway Antique Trail

Red Arrow Highway Antique Trail

Thu–Sun reliable

The old highway between New Buffalo and Bridgman is lined with antique dealers, mid-century modern shops, galleries, and vintage stores. This is the county’s signature browse and the reason a lot of people come without a plan. Most shops keep short weeks — Thursday through Sunday is the reliable window.

Four Winds Casino

Four Winds Casino

New Buffalo

Owned and operated by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, with gaming, a hotel, restaurants, and a concert schedule. It's the largest single employer and visitor draw in the south county and it runs year-round, which matters in February.

New Buffalo Beach, Harbor & Whittaker Street

New Buffalo Beach, Harbor & Whittaker Street

Beach access free · Paid parking in season · New Buffalo

The heart of the south county and the reason Harbor Country works without a car. Roughly 800 feet of public shoreline sits at the end of Whittaker Street, with the marina and harbor alongside it, and the shops and kitchens of the main street running straight back into town from the sand. Amtrak stops four blocks away.

Wine Country — Round Barn, Tabor Hill & the Lake Michigan Shore AVA

Wine Country — Round Barn, Tabor Hill & the Lake Michigan Shore AVA

Tastings ticketed · Daily

The Lake Michigan Shore AVA sits ten to fifteen minutes inland, where the lake effect that buries the county in snow also extends the growing season enough to ripen vinifera. Start with Round Barn — the landmark barn, live music at weekends, and the broadest beverage program in the county — and Tabor Hill, which adds vineyard dining. The 3.5-mile Mt. Tabor Trails connect the two, which is what turns this from a sequence of tasting rooms into an actual afternoon. For quieter and more wine-focused rooms, Domaine Berrien Cellars and Lemon Creek Winery share a road east of Berrien Springs, and Dablon Vineyards is ten minutes west; Gravity and Golden Muse round out the Baroda cluster. Tasting fees typically run $20–25 with a credit toward a bottle. Nearly all are open seven days.

The Fruit Belt — Orchards, Farm Markets & U-Pick

The landscape the county is actually built on. Jollay Orchards has been farming since 1857 and runs U-pick fruit, hayrides, a pumpkin patch, a corn maze, and cider doughnuts through the autumn; Lemon Creek combines a historic fruit farm, seasonal market, U-pick and estate winery on one property; Stover’s Farm Market and the northern-county orchards around Fruit Acres fill in the rest of the season. Come between August and October and this is the county.

The Lake Michigan Dune Coast

Michigan's famous dune chain starts here — Warren Dunes is the first unit north of the Indiana line. More than eighty percent of its visitors come from out of state, overwhelmingly Illinois and Indiana, which tells you everything about how this county's weekends work.

A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry at all state parks.

The county's headline hike and the busiest trail in this guide. From the modern campground, flat forest gives way to a deep-sand climb over the dune ridge with a full lake view at the top, then desert-like open sand down to the beach, a mile west along the shoreline, and a rolling wooded return with stairs. The interior dunes rise 240 to 260 feet above the water. Do it counterclockwise so the sand climb comes before the beach walk, not after.

Beyond the County Line

Two of the biggest days out from Harbor Country are not in Michigan at all. Both are close enough that leaving them off would misrepresent what a week here actually looks like.

Indiana Dunes National ParkBeyond the county line

Indiana Dunes National Park

Porter County, Indiana · Entrance fee · 30 min from New Buffalo · Year-round

A national park thirty minutes from New Buffalo, and the largest thing in this guide by a wide margin. Fifteen miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the highest dunes on the southern lake, and more plant diversity per acre than almost anywhere in the Midwest. The 3 Dune Challenge out of the state park inside it is the standard hard hour; West Beach has the loop everyone photographs; Mount Baldy is a moving dune with restricted access. Note the entrance fee and that the adjoining Indiana Dunes State Park charges separately.

South Bend & Notre DameBeyond the county line

South Bend & Notre Dame

St. Joseph County, Indiana · Mostly free · 45 min · Avoid football Saturdays

Forty-five minutes southeast, and the answer to rain, shoulder season, or travelling with anyone who has run out of beach. The Notre Dame campus is open to walk — the Basilica, the Grotto, and the golden dome — and the Snite and Raclin museums are free. In town, the Studebaker National Museum and the History Museum share a site, and the East Race whitewater course runs summer weekends. On home football Saturdays, do not attempt any of this.

Eat & Drink

Berrien has the deepest food scene of any county in this series, and the most confusing schedule. Both anchors fill completely on summer Saturdays — reserve. Check the closure lists above before you drive anywhere.

Explore over a long weekend

Structured from the south anchor. Reverse the order and swap Days 1 and 4 if you're basing in St. Joseph.

Day 1

Land in Harbor Country

Arrive and start at Farmette on US-12 for coffee and a loaf, then Whittaker Street in New Buffalo and the public beach at the end of it. Late afternoon, go to Galien River County Park for the canopy walkway and the 60-foot marsh tower — twenty minutes of walking for the best single view in the south county, and leave the dog at the house. Dinner at Red Arrow Roadhouse in Union Pier, or The Stray Dog in New Buffalo, which is open seven days.

Day 2

Dunes

Get to Warren Dunes early; the lot fills by eleven on summer weekends. Do the 4.8-mile loop counterclockwise — forest, then the sand climb over the ridge with the lake opening in front of you, then a mile along the shoreline back. Swim afterward. If you'd rather trade the beach for solitude, go to Grand Mere instead and walk the dunes above the three inland lakes. Late afternoon, drive fifteen minutes inland to Warren Woods and walk the old-growth beech-maple along the Galien River; it will reset your sense of what this landscape was. Dinner at Susan's in Sawyer, reserved in advance, or cocktails and small plates at The Historian.

Day 3

Three Oaks and the vineyards

Breakfast at Luisa's in Harbert if it's Thursday through Sunday, Black Currant in Union Pier otherwise. Work the Red Arrow antique trail north, stopping at the galleries and design stores along the way. Then inland to Baroda and Berrien Springs for the Lake Michigan Shore AVA — Domaine Berrien and Lemon Creek share a road; Dablon and Gravity are ten minutes west. Two tasting rooms is the right number. End in Three Oaks: Journeyman in the old Featherbone factory, dinner at Staymaker, and a show at The Acorn or a film at the Vickers if the calendar cooperates.

Day 4

North county

Drive thirty-five minutes up to St. Joseph. Brunch at Mason Jar in Benton Harbor, then the Krasl Art Center — free, with the Chihuly in the entry — and the Benton Harbor Arts District, which most visitors never see and shouldn't skip. Walk the South Pier at Silver Beach toward the lighthouses. If you want one more trail, Sarett Nature Center is fifteen minutes east and has the best naturalist programming in the county. Lunch at The Chef's House or The Brick House before you go.

Seasonal notes

Spring

Blossomtime in early May, when the fruit belt flowers and Michigan's oldest multi-community festival runs its parade through St. Joseph and Benton Harbor. Morels in the woods. Lupine and wild geranium at Grand Mere. Beach glass season on the shoreline.

Summer

Peak everything. Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff in July; Harbor Country Arts Festival in New Buffalo in August. Parking fees at every beach, and lots full by mid-morning on weekends.

Fall

The best value in the county. Orchards and cider from August through October, harvest at the wineries, fall color on the Galien River canopy walk, and beach parking free after Labor Day. The Blue Coast Artists studio tour in October opens a dozen working studios to the public.

Winter

Lake-effect snow is heavy here, which is exactly why the wine works. Galien River and Paw Paw River county parks close entirely; the Warren Woods Elm Valley Road entrance closes; state park trails become cross-country ski routes. Four Winds, the north county downtowns, and a thinner slate of Harbor Country restaurants carry the season.
