Hart County sits on the Georgia–South Carolina line where the Tugaloo and Seneca rivers pool into 56,000 acres of Lake Hartwell. It's the only county in Georgia named for a woman — Revolutionary War figure Nancy Hart — and the Cherokee called a spot just south of town the center of the world. This is a lake county with a real downtown attached. Come for the water; stay for the square.

Historic Downtown Hartwell & the Mural Tour

Historic Downtown Hartwell & the Mural Tour

Free · Year-round · Downtown

Hartwell's downtown core holds a nearly intact run of commercial buildings around the courthouse square, and the county's tourism office runs both a historic walking tour and a mural tour through it. Antique dealers, the community theatre, and a handful of good kitchens sit within a few blocks, along with Twelve South Artisan Market — a rotating artisan co-op on Carolina Street, closed Sunday and Monday. Small enough to walk end to end in fifteen minutes.

Hart County Botanical Garden

Hart County Botanical Garden

Free · Year-round · 5 min

More than a dozen themed plantings across a shaded property on the Elberton Highway, connected by level paved paths with most specimens labeled. There's a fairy garden, an amphitheater, a wetland, chainsaw tree carvings, and a covered porch built for sitting and watching the bird feeders. Free, open dawn to dusk, and the April plant sale is the busiest weekend of its year.

Hart County Historical Museum

Housed in the Victorian Teasley-Holland House alongside the chamber of commerce on East Howell. The collection runs to Nancy Hart artifacts, a Coca-Cola bottling machine from the town's plant, and clothing from the county's first decades. Founded 1989, volunteer-run, and worth a half hour before you drive out to the cabin site.

Hart County Community Theatre

Hart County Community Theatre

Ticketed · Season varies · Downtown

On historic Depot Street, staging a full season of productions with a volunteer cast drawn from across the county. Shows sell out — check dates before you plan around it, and don't expect the box office to be open more than a couple of mornings a week.

Lake Hartwell Wildlife Safari Park

Lake Hartwell Wildlife Safari Park

Ticketed · Wed–Sun · 20 min

A drive-through animal park north of town where ostriches and emus put their heads through your window. Rent one of their vehicles rather than take the shared bus or risk your own paint. Buy more feed than you think you need — the loop takes about 45 minutes. No advance ticketing, so arrive at open on weekends.

Cateechee Golf Club

Cateechee Golf Club

Ticketed · Year-round · 10 min

An Audubon Signature course — one of only two in Georgia — laid out south of town on Highway 77, with a 40,000-square-foot clubhouse and four lodging suites above the pro shop. Under new ownership as of recently, and course conditioning has drawn complaints; call and ask what shape the greens are in before committing to the green fee.

Sun Life Marina

Booking required · Seasonal · 10 min

The county’s main rental counter for pontoons, tubes, and lake gear, ten minutes north on the Reed Creek arm. Book pontoons well ahead for summer weekends. The Boathouse Grill sits on the same dock, so you can end the day where you started it.

Lake Hartwell Family Fun Center

Lake Hartwell Family Fun Center

Lake Hartwell

962 miles of shoreline, 56,000 acres, and a fishery that has hosted the Bassmaster Classic more times than any other water in the tournament’s history. The Corps of Engineers runs eight campgrounds and eleven day-use areas around the reservoir. The trails below are the ones worth driving to.

The best sustained hike in the county and the one locals send you to. Built by the Corps in partnership with SORBA, with another two miles added in 2013, it rolls through mixed pine and hardwood along the Tugaloo River arm with repeated shoreline openings. It's a shared bike trail — walk it against the posted bike direction so you see riders coming. Roots are the only real hazard. Open year-round, dogs on leash.

The 147-acre lakefront property that was Hart State Park until the city took it over in 2020, and the broadest single day out in the county: a swimming beach, boat ramp, campground, and access for kayaking and paddleboarding, with the Big and Little Cricket trail system threading the shoreline behind it. Walk the 3.2 miles, then get in the water. The park charges an entry fee and the campground runs seasonally, March 15 to September 15.

Two very different walks depending on which end you park at. From the Georgia side you approach the dam from below, along the Savannah River tailrace with the powerhouse in view. From the South Carolina side, a staircase puts you on the dam crest itself, lake on one hand and river gorge on the other. Do the South Carolina side for the view, the Georgia side for the picnic tables. Built in the late 1950s; there's no shade on the crest, so morning or evening.

A Corps day-use area on the lake close to town that functions as Hart County's event grounds — the YMCA triathlon, the Dam Dog Walk, and the Pre-Fourth fireworks all stage here. The tournament ramp on the Georgia side of the upper lake, built for the kind of field that arrives before dawn with a hundred boat trailers. Tugaloo occupies a 393-acre wooded peninsula pushing into Lake Hartwell from the Franklin County side. Nancy Hart Historic Park & Log Cabin

Nancy Hart Historic Park & Log Cabin

Fifty minutes south near Elberton, a replica cabin stands on the Harts' original 400-acre grant. The chimney stonework, hearth, and entrance steps are original; the rest was rebuilt. There's no visitor center, no staff, and no fee — just a marble marker with the story and a few picnic tables in the trees. Historians have never fully separated the Nancy Hart legend from folklore, which is part of what makes standing there interesting.

Part deli, part gift shop, and the place to build a cooler before you drive out to a trailhead. Pressed sandwiches on sourdough, potato soup, cakes on order. Closes at 5 most days and 4 on Saturday, so buy your lunch on the way out, not on the way back.

Blue Haven Bee Company & Southern Origin Meadery

Explore over a long weekend

Day 1

Get the lay of the land

Arrive and start at Common Ground for coffee before the square wakes up. Walk the 1879-to-1925 storefronts, dip into Twelve South and check what is on at the Hart County Community Theatre, and give the Hart County Historical Museum half an hour for the Nancy Hart material — it makes everything else in the county read differently. Drive three miles southwest to the Center of the World marker in the late afternoon light. Dinner at 329 Bar and Grill; reserve ahead, and remember they don’t open until four.

Day 2

The lake, properly

Build a cooler at Market 50 before they close, then drive twenty minutes out to Paynes Creek for the seven-mile loop through the Tugaloo arm. Walk it against the bike traffic. Cool off afterward at the Hartwell Lakeside Park swim beach on your way back in. End the day on the water at the Boathouse Grill — Thursday through Sunday only, and worth timing your trip around.

Day 3

Cross the line

Start early at the Hartwell Dam. Park on the South Carolina side, climb the steps to the crest, and walk the mile out with the lake on one hand and the Savannah River gorge on the other. From there, choose your day: north to Tugaloo State Park for the Sassafras Loop and a swim off the sand beach, west to Victoria Bryant for the county’s longest hike, or south toward Elberton for the Nancy Hart cabin site and the Russell Lake loops. Get back for dinner and a house-band set at High Cotton, with Southern Hart as the reliable fallback if the calendar is dark.

Day 4

Ease out

Walk the paved paths at the Hart County Botanical Garden in the morning — labeled plantings, tree carvings, and a porch built for sitting. If you have kids in the car, trade it for the drive-through safari park north of town and rent one of their vehicles. Lunch at Little Japan or a catfish plate at Jamie Todd’s. Then take the last hour at Big Oaks Recreation Area and watch the light go off the water before you get on I-85.

Seasonal notes

Spring

Bassmaster tournament season brings serious traffic to the ramps, especially at Green Pond Landing across the line. Botanical Garden plant sale in April; Antique Boat Festival at the marina.

Summer

Peak lake season. Pontoon rentals need to be booked weeks out. Pre-Fourth arts and crafts festival downtown and fireworks over the water at Big Oaks.

Fall

Depot Day Festival in October on Depot Street. Best hiking weather of the year and the trails empty out.

Winter

Most of the lake infrastructure closes. Downtown, the dam trail, and the botanical garden stay open. The Polar Bear Plunge at the marina in February is the county’s one reliable cold-weather event.
